It was a book I just wasn’t willing to replace. My Bible had accompanied me through my college years, my life abroad, and all my international adventures. Time had done a number on my Bible's condition. So, in the summer of 2015, I started looking into getting it rebound, but I wasn’t thrilled with what I found. Book binding and repair is a dying art - and expensive, too. I didn’t want to pay a ton of money for just another set of cardboard covers that I’d have to replace in ten years. I wanted a set of book covers that would really last. So, I decided to bind my Bible myself, and with absolutely no experience in the art of book binding, this was yet another dangerous adventure my Bible went on with me.
I had two decades of carpentry experience to lean on, but book binding was another animal entirely! The early bindings were pretty crude and mechanically clunky; yet even then they were getting attention.
It was the art of quarter-binding, a historically traditional method of bookbinding, that allows the use wood for the covers by taking advantage of the elasticity of leather for the hinge. The QBB binding method is a combination of traditional binding techniques with some modern innovations, incorporating the flexibility of leather and the look, feel, and durability of wood.
Quarterbound Books uses 100% deer-hide leather and real wood to make quality covers that look great and last a lifetime. QBB receives donations of deer-hide from hunters and leather-workers who wish to donate them. In addition, QBB recycles white, cotton t-shirts for hinge material, as well as cardboard from cereal boxes. By taking donations and by recycling material when possible, the cost of custom book covers and repairs is substantially more affordable.
Whatever the well-loved book may be, it deserves covers that communicate just that: covers that are bound to get noticed - bound to last.
Welcome to Quarterbound Books!
